Its cool if you download some of your favourite pics for your own personal enjoyment but please respect my copywrite by not copying or republishing them without my consent! Pease contact me by email if you are interested in purchasing an original photographic print of any of the photos - thanks!...Neil.

Here's how it started!

I started taking my camera along to gigs about 1990. I think the first one was Dinosaur jr, in Melbourne. It was the height of the grunge era. I had moved east from Perth (Australia) - not least because many of the bands that I was into would tour Australia but not make it to Perth. Very frustrating!

The grunge bands were great to see but somewhat life and camera threatening to photograph because the best vantage point tended to be somewhere around the front of the mosh pit! Nevertheless, I persevered, survived and came out with some good shots.

On the move!

While Melbourne was a good city for music, the cold weather didn't agree with me, so I moved up the coast to Sydney. Sydney was losing venues fast but in 1991 the first Big Day Out was held...

...I was still battling my way through the mosh pit and was lucky enough to be allowed to slip in front of the crowd barrier at just the right time to catch Nirvana complete their set and do the customary trashing of equipment!

Fortuitous meetings and a lucky break!

I had met Steve Pavlovic at a Fugazi gig. He was the promoter who had brought them to Australia, and as it turned out would bring out most of the bands that I wanted to see. We struck up a friendship and he would get me into his gigs and I would give him some copies of the photos I took.

Now Steve Pav happened to be the promoter for Nirvana. After the Big Day Out I gave him copies of my photos before Nirvana continued their tour. They finished the tour with a show at Selinas, in Sydney. After the gig, I met the band members. They had all seen my photos of them at the BDO and asked if they could possibly get some copies. I said they could.

On In Utero

It was some months later that I got a call from Geffen records saying that Nirvana wanted to use some of my photos on the cover of their next album. They also used my photo on the promotional copy of heart shaped box.

It was cool to be credited on the CD sleeve along with Charles Peterson (responsible for many of the great Sub Pop covers) and Kurt Kobain himself.

My photos are the live colour pics and the black and white shots from above the stage. I also have a couple of my photos in Michael Azerrad's book, "Come as you are : the story of nirvana."

Other stuff!

While the Nirvana cover is my biggest claim to fame, I have other CD credits; Magic Dirt, Noise Addicts and King Wasabi amongst them and have had my photos published in various 'rock' media ; Rolling Stone, Juice, On the Street, X-Press...

I am living in Perth, Western Australia now. I continue to photograph live bands and do promotional shoots for bands. For any further info or feedback (its nice to know if you like the site!) please email me at neilpics@yahoo.com
