Most of my images are from the Kimberley, made during a bicycle ride from Hall's Creek to Derby along the Tablelands Track and the Gibb River Road. It was in the Kimberley that I first learnt some rudimentary skills in cinema projection at the Kununurra Picture Gardens, that eventually led to working at Luna Cinemas in Fremantle. It was there I got to know Neil Wallace and it was through one of our between-selling-chocbombs conversations that this exhibition came about. We had both been amazed and inspired by the diversity of colour, texture and shape of trees, particularly the trunk (torso?), and we each had a few photographs from our travels along that theme. |

I must confess to a very limited botanical knowledge. I could not tell you what type of tree half my torso shots are - but that's not really important to me. to me they are portraits of individuals - not types. As in portraits of people I am interested in a relationship with the subject which portrays some aspects of their personality and character. I made my first torso image in the national park up from the hawkesbury about ten years ago. since then I have usually done one or two torso shots whenever I am in 'the bush'. recently, I travelled to Broome and through the Kimberley and Pilbara (in a car, not bike, like steve!) so I have quite a few torsos from that trip as well as from the southwest and even one from europe. |
